You don’t get to see it in the movie, but the Top Gun: The Novel goes into great detail about Iceman’s past. Sure, he may come across as an emotionally distant bad boy, but underneath that rugged, hotshot exterior is a big, beautiful heart that just wants to be loved. His parents’ divorce was messy, and as a seven-year-old, Iceman had to learn quickly to bury those strong emotions before they get the better of you.
